Convivium

Last night a few of us went out on the town, starting our evening at the Convivium Enoteca. It is located at the unfortunately named Piazza della Morte (Plaza of the Dead). Remarkably, for late September, we were able to sit outside on the plaza. Viterbese don't like dining outside when it is "cold" so most outside dining folds up its tents sometime in early to mid-September. To be dining "in the nature" into the beginning of October is a rare treat. We shared a light bodied, red wine from Puglia called Negro Amaro. It just hit the spot when coupled with the antipasto buffet packed with luscious little tidbits of this and that. We moved on after a pleasant hour or so to avoid paying a cover charge for the live music which looked less than entertaining. Below is a picture of the fountain in the Piazza della Morte. The table we sat at is directly behind the fountain.

Our second, and final, stop of the night was at a beautifully situated little restaurant called simply L'Osteria which overlooks the Valle Faul. This is the open area created after the bombings of WWII. Currently on display in the valley is a sculpture by J. Seward Johnson called Il Risveglio (The Awakening of the Conscience of Man). It is a five piece installation which is traveling throughout at least Italy where it has also been displayed in Siracusa and Roma. I think the best time to view it might actually be at night since it is spotlit and really pops out. During the day it is sort of lost in the larger green space. Pizza, beer and then a leisurely stroll home completed our evening.
